LFAS Photo-Mosaic Mural
This large scale mural project was initiated by a small group of Butterfly Effect/Photography students from the Langley Fine Arts School.
If you look close enough, you might notice that the panoramic image of the forest is a mosaic combining of 17,500 portraits of people in the school community. Each student, teacher, and staff was photographed 5 times with different facial expressions; then each image was reproduced several times to create the mosaic.
The Langley Fine Arts School has a close connection to this special forest. A few years ago, the students at LFAS participated in a gathering to educate the community to save the Blaauw (McLellan) Forest.
The goal of the mural is to raise awareness for the mental, physical, and environmental benefits of nature and the important role we all play in respecting and protecting it. We hope that this arts inquiry will foster a sense a community within our school while educating and inspiring future generations.

Special Thanks
This project would not have been likely or possible without the help from the Butterfly Effect community and the Canadian Scholarship Trust grant for student initiated inquiry projects.
We also thank the Langley Fine Arts School community- Photography Majors 11/12, Mr. Bonnar, staff, students, parents. Extra shout out to the LFAS PAC and local businesses for your additional support.

And finally to Sybren at Mosaizer; we didn't think that it was possible to create a photo mosaic of this scale. Sybren made the project happen- he was very professional, affordable and helpful.

The Making of the Mural
LFAS Mural Project
When we were introduced to anonymous street artist JR who captures local issues through photography in our Photography 11/12 class, we were inspired to make something for the Langley Fine Arts School community.

A few students volunteered to lead the team to create the mural, meeting every week to discuss potential themes and prospective topics. They joined the Butterfly Effect class to research and share ideas. The team worked collectively, spoke with people in the community to choose an area of concern.

Once we had our general topic, the whole class went on a field trip to visit the Blaauw Eco Forest to photograph it. Benoit Cecile’s panoramic image was the chosen photo to be the theme behind the mosaic.
